What are the Health Benefits of Ginger?

The list of health benefits ginger can provide is a fairly long one. Being such a flavorful spice, ginger is a very common ingredient in a wide variety of dishes, especially in Asia. In addition to its use in various food dishes, it can also be found in a number of drinks, as well. It’s very common for various energy and health drinks to contain ginger. It is also quite common for people to add a bit of ginger to their coffee or tea. But what kind of health reasons are there to consider when looking at ginger?

Studies have shown that ginger can be used when treating ovarian cancer. When applied to ovarian cancer cells, ginger was shown to promote cell death in all cells it was applied to. Besides ovarian cancer, it has been found that ginger can help prevent the growth of colon cancer as well.

For the women out there dealing with morning sickness, ginger can be a great natural remedy to help combat any morning sickness symptoms. Because of this, ginger can be as effective, if not more so, than B6, which is often used in the treatment of this inconvenient health issue.

In addition to helping deal with symptoms of morning sickness, ginger has also been found to help prevent and treat the common cold and flu. This intriguing root can also help treat cases of stomach flu and food poisoning, due to the positive effects it has on your digestive tract. Have you ever been suffering from some sort of stomach bug and had someone suggest drinking ginger ale? It’s not just because it tastes good. It’s actually a great way of boosting your immune system and getting rid of that nasty stomach discomfort!

Ginger has also been found to be a great natural pain reliever and anti-inflammatory. Because of this, many people use ginger as a way of helping the treatment of various pains, general headaches and even migraines. Using ginger in this way can be a great alternative to typical pain relievers and anti-inflammatory medications, such as Tylenol, as extensive use of some medications can cause very serious long-terms effects, such as stomach ulcers and in some very extreme cases, even death.

Studies have also shown that ginger can be used to help prevent kidney damage in patients with diabetes. Though studies have not been extensive, with experiments only having been done on rats, the results were certainly promising.

In addition to being able to add the actual spice to your diet, you can also find various ginger supplements at just about any drug store. I personally follow Jon Gabriel’s advice and put a fresh chunk in my daily green smoothie. It adds flavor and nutrients in one go.

I would like to make a quick note to those considering consuming ginger on a more regular basis, however. If you’re on any kind of blood thinning medication, you should probably check with your doctor before adding ginger into your diet, as some studies have shown it can have a slight interference with your condition. This is only something to be considered when you plan on consuming larger quantities of the spice.
